Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura)
Length: about 25".
Photographed on May 27, 2005, along the refuge's Wildlife Loop (map) near Snow Goose Pool.

Uncommon all year on Assateague Island, the turkey vulture searches for carcasses, relying in part on its keen sense of smell. This one was disturbed at a meal in the marsh grass and took refuge in a nearby tree, and then moved to the top of a dead tree as the photographer moved closer.
