The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (located on Assateague Island), founded in 1943 as a wintering area for migratory waterfowl, is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In the 1960's a causeway and bridge were built providing access to the refuge on Assateague from Chincoteague.

The refuge visitor center (757-336-6122) schedules guided walks and other informational activities. The Wildlife Loop (3.2 miles) is open to walkers and bicyclists all day and to cars at 3 p.m. Other walking paths include the Woodland Trail (1.6 miles) and the Assateague Lighthouse Trail (0.25 miles).

The Assateague Island National Seashore, operated by the National Park Service, schedules guided walks and interpretive activities at the Toms Cove Visitor Center. During the summer months, a section of the beach near the visitor center is protected by National Park Service lifeguards. Restrooms and outdoor showers are available.
