Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
Length: about 36".
Photographed on May 27, 2005, along the refuge's Wildlife Loop (map) at the edge of Snow Goose Pool.

Common in spring, fall, and winter, but uncommon in summer, this heron feeds on fish, aquatic invertebrates, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians. This juvenile lacks the typical white crown of the adult - which usually comes after the bird's third fall.
