Birdhouse 117 - Wood Duck Nest Box

Location: Wildlife Loop

The wood duck's natural nesting place is a tree cavity, at least five feet above the ground (or water) in a wooded area by a swamp, pond, river, or freshwater marsh. April and May are the peak months in the nesting season although nests may be built as early as February.

Since raccoons, opossums, and snakes eat wood duck eggs, a predator shield (galvanized sheet metal) is placed on the post below the nesting box (bottom photo). Birdhouse 117 has a hinged side door for cleaning the box between nestings.

Dimensions, etc.:

  • side: height (sloping) = 25-24 in., width = 14 in.
  • front: height = 24 in., width = 11.5 in.
  • entrance: diameter = 3 in.; centered with top edge = 4 in. from top front
  • side door: single hinge, peg latch; height = 6 in.; top edge = 12 in. from middle top side
  • roof overhangs front by 1 - 2 inches
